The IEEE South Africa Section invites to an IEEE Senior Membership (SMIEEE) Elevation workshops, where experienced senior members of IEEE South Africa Section will assist eligible members with how they can reach elevation to IEEE Senior Member (SM) Grade. Participants will receive an introduction to IEEE, IEEE Senior membership and related processes, as well as hands-on assistance on the application process. 

We are inviting key IEEE Senior Members, Fellows and prospective members to an event for the purpose of expediting your application. 

 

Who qualifies for Senior membership?

• Candidates who are engineers, scientists, educators, technical executives, or originators in IEEE-designated fields (including engineering, computer sciences and information technology, biological and medical sciences, mathematics, physical sciences; technical communications, education, management, law and policy, as defined in IEEE Bylaw 1‑104.11)
• Candidates who have been in professional practice for at least 10 years
  • Bachelor degree may count as an equivalent of three of those years
  • Masters and Bachelor degrees, together, may count as four of those years
  • PhD, Masters and Bachelor degrees, together, may count as five of those years.
• Candidates who have shown “significant performance” over a period of at least five of those years in professional practice.

Please bring four copies of both your completed application form and detailed CV (hardcopies or on your laptop/notebook), complete with full details and dates to the event. Ideally, you will also need three references from qualified IEEE Senior Members, Fellows or Honorary Members. Your nomination by an IEEE Section or Society counts as one reference, when also endorsed by a qualified SeniorMember, Fellow, or Honorary Member.

 

About Senior Membership

Senior Membership exists to recognize outstanding career achievements. So, on your Senior Member Application and your own resume or CV, it is vital to state your professional experience and significant performance in full with specific dates.  

You’ll also need three references from qualified IEEE Senior Members, Fellows or Honorary Members (they will need to complete this short form).  Your nomination by this Section/Society may count as one reference, when also endorsed by a qualified Senior Member, Fellow, or Honorary Member. 

 

How to Apply for Senior Membership yourself
You have the option to self-nominate (also done using the same online or downloadable form).  See the Senior Member Application, benefits and other material at this Web site address:  http://www.ieee.org/seniormember. The applications can be made:

* online (http://www.ieee.org/membership/senior/application/index.html - here you will need your IEEE membership credentials to log in), or 

* by email (senior-member at ieee.org). The email method requires completing the editable form.

What's Next?

IEEE members represent around 10% of IEEE membership. The next stage is Fellowship in IEEE - only around 2% of IEEE members are Fellow grade (in South Africa, the statistic is even more drastic - in 2017, we only had 0.5% of our members being Fellow or Life Fellow).
